Description and Teaching Objectives
A Master of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology and Biomedical Research aims at training biologists able to use their knowledge of cell and molecular biology in the various fields relating to biological mechanisms and their underlying functioning, e.g. regarding prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, plants and animals, cell interactions in developing organisms, parasite-host and genotype-phenotype interactions. Moreover, the course enables the students to address scientific issues related to neurobiology and diseases related to neoplastic transformation, gene dysregulation or inflammation.
The course includes:
- Training activities aimed at acquiring in-depth knowledge of basic biology and its applications with particular focus on biomolecules, cells, tissues and organisms in health and disease situations; acquiring useful knowledge to understand phenomena at biomolecular, cellular, genomic and proteomic level; achieving specific expertise in basic and applied biology;
- Training activities, lectures and laboratory exercises focusing on teaching via experimental methods and data processing;
- Internships in companies and laboratories, study periods within other Italian and European universities falling under international agreement frameworks (Erasmus Placement);
- A final test with a final dissertation reporting the results of a scientific or technological original research. Such work requires full-time attendance in a research laboratory.
Career Opportunities
Graduates in Cell and Molecular Biology and Biomedical Research shall master technical knowledge and work as professionals in various areas. They will be prepared to operate at a senior level both in basic research laboratories and in health-oriented laboratories.
They can access PhD programmes offered by national or international universities. After registering at the National Order of Biologists they can be autonomous professional biologists. They can participate in projects of basic and applied research in universities and research institutes, public and private biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical or food firms.
Areas of application: departments, agencies and public bodies (Regions, Provinces, Municipalities), public social and health care, hospitals and private clinical laboratories, private professional practices, science communication or science teaching in secondary schools.
